Problems are the main driver of innovation

"One of the ways of finding a good problem is to find something that people try to avoid in everyday life. If you can recognize such a problem, ideas will follow." says Greg Satell, a successful entrepreneur and one of the leading experts on innovation, who will be speaking at SEMPL.

The achievement the renowned opinion leader Greg Satell is most proud of is the work he has done at Korrespondent magazine, the leading Ukranian independent news organization, which played an important role in the Orange Revolution and the positive transformation of the country. He drew parallels between social and political transformations and transformations in business and in staff and customer management, while also filling the gaps in the literature about change management in a way that has never been seen before. “It is crucial that you are prepared for resistance when you introduce changes. You therefore need a plan to support the changes you want to implement and at the same time overcome resistance” Satell says.

Satell is the author of the books “Mapping innovation” and “Cascades: How to Create a Movement that Drives Transformational Change“. In the first book he doesn’t talk about innovation as a one-time event, but rather as a process of discovery, engineering and transformation. The second book addresses only the latter. “During the revolution I was thrilled to see how thousands of different people who in normal circumstances would have done thousands of different things, suddenly were all doing the same thing. Of course I was immediately interested in how to apply this to business. How to convince consumers, who want to buy so many different things, to buy the thing I want to sell them” Satell said about the initial ideas for his last book.

Satell is also the author of the successful blog DigitalTonto, which regularly places him on the lists of “top innovation bloggers” and opinion leaders you should be following. “I hope this means that my work helps people. Because this is all I am aiming at, helping people”, one of the main speakers at this year’s conference was modest about his impressive achievements.
